Ottawa launch of Resilience is Futile: The Life and Death and Life of Julie S. Lalonde following International Women’s Day

Wednesday, March 4, 2020

Ottawa- Library and Archives Canada, the Ottawa International Writers Festival and Ottawa Public Library invite you to an evening of discussion with Julie S. Lalonde, renowned women’s rights advocate, public educator and now author, for the launch of her book Resilience is Futile: The Life and Death and Life of Julie S. Lalonde.Join us on Wednesday, March 11, 2020 at 7:30 pm, on the tails of International Women’s Day (March 8) to hear Lalonde share her story, hosted by CBC News Ottawa host Lucy van Oldenbarneveld.

This memoir tells the story of Lalonde’s work as an award-winning advocate for women’s rights and her public appearances denouncing violence against women, all the while harbouring her own secret. Having fled intimate partner violence at the age of twenty, she was stalked by her ex-partner for over ten years, and rarely told friends let alone addressed it publicly.

Resilience is Futileexplores the dual reality of Lalonde’s public career as an advocate and champion for women and her private life of fear and violence. It is a story of survival, courage and ultimately hope, all the while challenging the ways we understand trauma and resilience.
