Helen was dedicated to improving many aspects of community life in Queenswood Heights, she served as a member of the Queenswood Heights Community Association (QHCA), the Cumberland Township Public Library Board, and the Cumberland Township Community Resource Centre Board of Directors, to name just a few of her many organizational commitments. In 2000, she was named Citizen of the Year by the City of Cumberland. In 2018, Helen was also posthumously awarded the Ottawa Public Library's prestigious Order of Friendship Award. Helen was a founding member of the Bookworm Used Bookstore at the Cumberland Branch of the Ottawa Public Library, where she contributed countless hours to helping FOPLA raise funds to benefit the Ottawa Public Library.

It is estimated she helped raise more than $500,000 in funds to support the Ottawa Public Library's activities. Helen also served as an inspiration to other FOPLA volunteers whom she helped recruit, train, and support, and was well known as a voracious reader herself. Her own personal library contained more than 10,000 books, and she brought her love of learning and literacy into the volunteer work she performed at the Cumberland Branch every day.
