Ottawa Public Library & Family Services Ottawa host Jazz & Friends Rainbow Storytime in support of transgender and non-binary youth

Friday, February 21, 2020

Ottawa – Educators, families, allies, and community members are coming together to promote reading and show their support for transgender, gender-creative, and non-binary youth with readings of I Am Jazz, by Jessica Herthel and Jazz Jennings.

Inspired by Human Rights Campaign’s Jazz & Friends National Day of School and Community Readings, Ottawa Public Library (OPL) and Family Services Ottawa’s (FSO) Around the Rainbowprogram, are hosting a special edition of Rainbow Storytime which celebrates diverse families and encourages youth to embrace who they are.

Special guest and award-winning local author, Amanda Jetté Knox (@MavenOfMayhem), as well as OPL staff and members of the 2SLGBTQ+ community will be reading I Am Jazz—based on Jazz Jennings’ real-life experiences—and other inclusive titles during the event.

About Rainbow Storytime

Storytime at the Library develops early literacy skills and supports caregivers through stories, rhymes and songs for three- to six-year-olds. Rainbow Storytimes provide a welcoming space where everyone can find stories that reflect their personal experiences and where diverse ideas and opinions can be shared and discussed. The stories presented are selected for their ability to engage young audiences and to explore universal human themes such as growing up, learning, friendship, cooperation, honesty, responsibility, self-acceptance, and resilience. Rainbow Storytime promotes learning, connects people and builds successful and inclusive communities through its programming and its vast collection.
