Dive into imagination with OPL's Family Literacy Day!

Monday, January 15, 2024

OTTAWA - Family Literacy Day, on Saturday, January 27, is a fixture in the calendar year at Ottawa Public Library (OPL) ever since its creation by ABC Life Literacy Canada in 1999. This year's theme, "Let’s have a family party," invites families to dive into a world where stories come alive and the whole family can have fun building essential early literacy skills.

Embark on a magical journey with Rob Justus and meet this fascinating local author on Saturday, January 27! Join with friends, neighbours, and other families for the exciting launch of Rob’s latest graphic novel 'Death and Sparkles 2: The Sacred Golden Cupcake.' This in-person event is perfect for kids aged 8-12. Some participants will go home with a signed copy of the new book! Rob will lead participants in drawing workshops that will fire up the imagination and stoke a love of books and learning.

Rob will hold this interactive workshop at three OPL branches, so register soon as they fill up quickly. Details and registration on the OPL website:

The enchantment continues with  engaging storytelling using story cubes. Rory’s Story Cubes is a game that spurs on storytelling in a fun way that family and friends will enjoy together. Join in this group activity at an OPL branch near you on Family Literacy Day. Virtually, Barbara Reid, celebrated author, illustrator and plasticene artist, will lead a virtual workshop on creating whole words and stories out of clay!   This isn't just an event; it's a celebration of shared stories, ignited imaginations, and unleashed creativity. Strengthen bonds, create, explore, and revel in the joy of learning together. Check which clay creation events are happening at which OPL branch and join in the fun and creativity!

Get the whole family to the Library to enjoy Family Literacy Day events and make literacy a true family affair!
