Celebrate French culture around the world this month at the Ottawa Public Library

Monday, March 1, 2021

OTTAWA—March is Francophonie month and an opportunity to join other countries around the world in celebrating not only the French language but also the rich and diverse francophone culture shared by more than 350 million Francophones in 88 countries across five continents.  As the largest French and English bilingual public library in North America, Ottawa Public Library invites Francophones and Francophiles of all ages to enjoy several special programs and explore OPL’s many resources in French this month. Why not seize the opportunity to speak, live, read, write and celebrate in French and join in the following virtual activities:

  • March 17 at 6 pm: Be part of la Croisée des mots with the author Soufiane Chakkouche, a French-speaking journalist, screenwriter and writer of Moroccan origin, who will introduce you to the plots of his award-winning detective novels.

  • March 20 at 3:30 pm: Live on YouTube, children and their families will be able to have fun with Ariane DesLions' fabulous sound machine and discover the wonderful stories in song.

  • March 27 at 1:30 pm: Writing enthusiasts will be able to participate in a writing workshop with Martine Batanian, as part of the History of Immigration contest organized by Éditions David.

  • March 30 at 7 pm: Participate in Our Stories: Indigenous Book Club featuring Josephine Bacon. The author will talk about her book Uiesh - Quelque part, a book of poetry in French and Montagnais.

In addition to these events, be sure to visit the OPL's YouTube channel to discover several series in French, including the Be Active at Home series. Also check out the Library's Facebook page in the Video section to view the latest French-language programs.

What better time than Francophonie Month to discover several online francophone resources such as ToutapprendreGénéalogie Québec, digital and audio books, animated children's books, magazines, newspapers and more!

Finally, from the comfort of your home, the Library invites you to explore a wonderfully eclectic list of recommended books, films and music curated especially for Francophonie Month! For more information on our French programs, visit BiblioOttawaLibrary.ca.
