Star Wars Day – May the Fourth be with you

Stars wars characters

May 04, 2021

May the Fourth is recognized around the world as Star Wars Day and is a play on the iconic Star Wars’ phrase “may the force be with you.” Though we are on our third lockdown and many of us are wishing we were in a galaxy far, far away, the Ottawa Public Library is celebrating this momentous day. While OPL can’t yet make the jump to hyperspace, we can offer you an escape to the Star Wars universe with books for kids, teens, and adults. If you’ve exhausted all the Star Wars content your streaming service has to offer, these books allow for a more in-depth look at fans’ favourite characters, as well as introduce us to some new ones.

We first met Ahsoka Tano in the Clone Wars series, where she stole the show as Anakin Skywalker’s Padawan. She then made appearances in Star Wars Rebels, the Mandalorian, and then we learned that she will be getting her own series! Until that airs, get your fix by reading Ahsoka, a novel by Canadian author E.K. Johnston. The book tells Ahsoka’s story between the Clone Wars and rebels and is appropriate for middle grade readers, teens, and adults. Have you ever wondered how to events of the original Star Wars trilogy impacted ordinary people living around the galaxy? Check out Lost Stars, where we meet Thane and Ciena, childhood friends who wind up on opposing sides of the galactic conflict. Lost Stars is suitable for teens and adults. Younger fans readers will enjoy the Jedi Academy series, which follows the adventures of Roan, a young Jedi. Roan’s story is told through comics and journal entries. Fans of Star Wars Rebels will have met Grand Admiral Thrawn, who first appeared in Heir to the Empire by Timothy Zahn, originally published in 1991. This fascinating villain appears in many books, including his own trilogy, Star Wars: Thrawn. These and other books featuring Grand Admiral Thrawn are geared towards teens and adults.

The books mentioned above are only a few in the Ottawa Pubic Library’s Star Wars collection. For more Star Wars reading suggestions, please consult the list below. Happy Reading, and may the force be with you.
