As the holiday season approaches, the spirit of giving is in the air, and what better way to share the joy of reading and learning than with a fun holiday book giveaway? We're talking about piles of wonderful, pristine books for youth and children waiting to find their forever homes. 

Participating in Ottawa Public Library's book giveaway is as easy as pie (or should we say, as easy as turning a page?). Here's what you need to do: 

Contest Details:  

  • Answer the following question by leaving comments on the blog.

  • What is the best book you ever received or gave as a gift. Tell us about it.  

  • 18 lucky winners will be chosen randomly.
  • The contest will close Monday, December 18 at noon.

I received the novel The Light We Lost by Jill Santopolo as a gift. It was a beautiful heartbreaking story about love that I read in two days.

A Florence Nightingale biography

I gave my mother a Florence Nightingale biography. Unfortunately, I don't remember the exact title. Being a retired nurse, my mother looked up to Florence N., being a pioneer of sanitation in hospitals, amongst other great things she did for that field. I was proud of gifting the book to my mother, as I knew she would enjoy it!

The Cat From Outer Space by Ted Key

My older brother always gave me books for Chistmas and my birthday when I was a kid. He gave me many wonderful books, but for some reason, a 1978 paperback entitled The Cat From Outer Space by Ted Key was the most beloved. I read it over and over until it was dog-eared! In fact, I am pretty sure it is in my bookcase almost 50 years later, among the treasures I cannot relinquish. I think the most important book for children to read is the one they love the most - which leads to a lifetime love affair with books!

When I went to the mammoth book sale that the library did, I saw this awesome book Pure Joy The Dogs we Love by Danielle Steel, I knew that this was the book that I would like to get and ever since then I really enjoy this book as it has emotions and the special bond of puppies and dogs.

I love giving books to the children in my life, "And Tango Makes Three" is a favourite. Best I have received - "Loose End" by Ivan Coyote.

How Big Things Get Done by Bent Flyvbjerg

I received this book and really enjoyed the insights into why big projects with unlimited money and smart people managing it still go wrong. It unpacks and exposes the errors in judgment and decision-making that can ultimately lead projects to fail.

Filipinx: Heritage Recipes from the Diaspora

I received this cookbook as a present and, much to my surprise, it had a recipe for a holiday treat called food for the gods which I used to eat around this time of year as a child in the Philippines. To be able to make it again for my family here is such a gift!
