International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples

As marked by the United Nations, August 9th is the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples.

Highlighting the rights and ways of Indigenous Peoples across the globe – with particular emphasis on many Indigenous Peoples’ relation to and protection of the environment – this day also offers a chance to reflect on the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.

The focus for this year’s celebration is “the role of Indigenous women in the preservation and transmission of traditional knowledge”. This spotlights the work of Indigenous women as knowledge-keepers and land defenders, while also highlighting the systemic inequities they continue to battle. On this International Day of the World’s Indigenous People, explore resources that highlight Indigenous women’s strength and knowledge through the list below.
