How to Help a Senior Who is Isolated

Mar 21, 2020

The wonderful resources for activities online are great if you have a computer or a cell phone and access to the Internet.  Do you know someone who is not connected to the Internet?

Think of how you can help them from feeling isolated.  Here are a few ideas:

Calling them regularly on the phone for a chat.  They can really feel connected over the phone!
Check if there is anything they need to have delivered.  Share news of what you are doing.
Go to their window and talk to them through an open window.
Deliver material that interests them in a sealed bag:

  • Perhaps they like crossword puzzles, word searches, or jigsaw puzzles.  If they are in a retirement community, all group activities of this sort are cancelled so having activities in their own room is a substitute.
  • If they like to read, consider books on your shelf that they have not read.

Consider getting them involved with Seniors Centre Without Walls (SCWW) organized by the Good Companions Seniors Centre.  Through the use of multi-person phone calls, SCWW provides the opportunity for participants to join in on health and wellness seminars, educational lectures, brain-stimulating activities, listen to live musical entertainment, join in on general conversations, and make new and meaningful friendships – all from home!  It works just the same as attending a class or a lecture at the centre, but instead it is facilitated over the telephone.  For more information, please contact Laura Ward, SCWW Coordinator, at 613-236-0428 ext. 2323 or by email at scww@thegoodcompanions.ca .
