Atwood Gibson Writers' Trust Fiction Prize - Awards night!

Nov 21, 2023

Tonight, November 21st, the Writers Trust Awards take place and name a winner chosen by the jury from the shortlist.

The event takes place in Toronto, and you can follow along from the comfort of your home on the Writers Trust website or their YouTube channel. You can find out more details about the livestream announcement on their page.

We will update this blog post Tuesday morning with news of the winning title and author, and look forward to hearing what you thought of shortlist and longlist novels, and what you think of the winning story.

Update: Author Kai Thomas has won this year's Atwood Gibson Writers' Trust Fiction Prize for his novel, In the Upper Country. In their citation, the jury said:

In this exceptional debut, Kai Thomas deftly and compassionately braids deeply engrossing stories within stories that explore a little-known aspect of Canadian history. In the Upper Country is a mesmerizing, lyrical testament to the power of storytelling, as this is among the protagonists’ tools for survival in a harsh reality rife with violence and dehumanization. Thomas immerses us in the novel’s compelling landscape where, despite an honest depiction of the effects and consequences of enslavement for Black and Indigenous peoples in Canada, hope remains palpable.
