Celebrate Family Literacy Day with the Ottawa Public Library

Friday, January 21, 2022

Family Literacy Day is held annually on January 27 to raise awareness across Canada of the importance of reading and engaging in other literacy-related activities as a family.  Each year, the Ottawa Public Library celebrates Family Literacy Day by offering an exciting family-friendly program.

This year, the Library invites families to join our Family Literacy Day Celebration with an online   StoryWalk. The Ottawa Public Library has partnered with local author/illustrator Timm Holmes to create a unique and original “Choose Your Own Adventure” Virtual  StoryWalk.

The Pieced Together StoryWalk fits in perfectly with this year's Family Literacy Day theme, “Learning in the Great Outdoors!”, as you can view or listen to the StoryWalk from the comfort of your home or stream it on a mobile device on a family walk. We hope to recycle this wonderful storytelling and story-creating experience into an outdoor in-person event once the pandemic and the winter weather subside in the near future.

Join us Thursday January 27 on our YouTube channel and website to experience our Pieced Together StoryWalk. This immersive concept allows families to choose their own adventure and make choices along the way so that there’s multiple endings to the same story. Engaging activities like these help families learn and grow together.

OPL encourages early literacy by making storytelling, songs, and music a part of your child’s daily life by celebrating the joy of reading and learning as a family.

The library also offers many resources for family literacy including Tumblebooks,  Hoopla and last year, the library also introduced Take home storytimes so that families can recreate the magic of storytime together at home.

Learn more about these resources and more by following the links on the Library’s  parenting page.
