The Giller Prize 2023 - Gala Night!

Lundi 13 novembre 2023

Through out autumn, a panel of judges has gone through the longlist, narrowing titles down to a shortlist, and now the gala night and announcement of the winner of the 2023 Scotiabank Giller Prize is here!

Tonight, beginning at approximately 9:00pm, the event begins. When the jury announcement happens, we cannot say. This blog will be updated Tuesday morning with details on the winning book and author.

You can follow the event live through the CBC's media outlets.

Until then, we want to know what your favourite novel from the 2023 Giller titles is. You can view the longlist and the shortlist books on the Giller website.

You can place holds on shortlist books appearing at the bottom of this blog.

UPDATE: The 2023 prize was awarded to Sarah Bernstein for her work, Study for Obedience. Of the story, the jury noted

“The modernist experiment continues to burn incandescently in Sarah Bernstein’s slim novel, Study for Obedience. Bernstein asks the indelible question: what does a culture of subjugation, erasure, and dismissal of women produce? In this book, equal parts poisoned and sympathetic, Bernstein’s unnamed protagonist goes about exacting, in shockingly twisted ways, the price of all that the world has withheld from her. The prose refracts Javier Marias sometimes, at other times Samuel Beckett. It’s an unexpected and fanged book, and its own studied withholdings create a powerful mesmeric effect.”

Did you have Study for Obedience as the 2023 winner before the announcement was made? Or did you hang your hat on the other shortlisted titles, such as Birnam Wood (by Eleanor Catton), The Double Life of Benson Yu (by Kevin Chong), The Islands (by Dionne Irving), or All the Colour in the World (by C.S. Richardson)?

We love hearing what you're reading and what you think about it. Let us know in the comments below!
