Small Things Like These is the perfect book for Christmas

It was surprising to hear Ann Archer mention Jody Wilson-Raybould’s book “Truth and Reconciliation” in this episode. As a Justin Trudeau cabinet minister who broke with him, I assumed that the book panel had voted her off the island. But of course, her book was only mentioned tangentially and not one of the 20 books suggested for reading. A book that some readers might be interested in, published in 2021 rather than in 2022, is Claire Keegan’s “Small Things Like These”. Taking place in the weeks leading up to Christmas, it deals with Ireland when the infamous Magdalen laundries were still in operation, and a quiet, unassuming small business owner who steps up to protect an innocent girl in defiance of the powers arrayed against him. It’s a wonderful novella by a wonderful author. Happy New Year and Merry Christmas to everyone!
