Intergenerational Movie Month

Are you human? Do you have an age? Then chances are you can relate to the movies we'll be showing at the Main branch during the month of September. Or maybe just one of them. Or maybe just a couple minutes of one of them. Whatever. It's a free movie and if it's hot outside there's air conditioning. Don't let our extremely poor and loosely planned out theme for the month shy you away.

For the month of September we'll be playing films that deal with intergenerational relationships. Whether it's between old and young, between family members or  between generations, these films all deal with human relationships and their permutations. All films will be presented in our auditorium and are free to attend.

The first film will be Starlet (2012). Directed by Sean Baker, the film explores the unlikely relationship between a young woman named Jane and an elderly woman named Sadie. Jane purchases a thermos at Sadie's yard sale and its contents force them into reluctant encounters with each other.

The second film will be Minari (2020), directed by Lee Isaac Chung. Set in the rural United States of the 1980s, a family of South Korean immigrants try to make a living on their newly purchased farmland. At one point, the maternal grandmother moves in with the family and the younger children find it difficult to connect with and understand their grandmother.

Our third film will be the 2012 film The Place Beyond the Pines by Derek Cianfrance. The film is split between three main storylines. The first explores the life of a motorcycle stunt performer who turns to a life of crime to support his family. The second follows a police officer whose life in the police department drastically changes in part because of his coming into contact with the former storyline. The final story thread involves two troubled youths who both have connections to the two previous stories.

The last film will be 2022's Everything Everywhere All At Once by Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert. Evelyn and her husband Waymond are being audited by the IRS. Evelyn is at some point contacted by beings from parallel universes who try to convince her to connect to other versions of herself in the multitude of universes that exist in order to defeat a growing evil in the multiverse. Evelyn must confront this while also dealing with her broken relationship with her daughter and the threat of her family's future together.

Note: The films are intended for a mature audience. Some films contain violence, nudity, strong language and drug use. The films will be screened in their original language with English subtitles where applicable.
