In a small Indian village, Ranjit wakes up to find that his 13-year-old daughter has not returned from a family wedding. A few hours later, she’s found stumbling home. After being abducted into the woods, she was sexually assaulted by three men. Ranjit goes to the police, and the men are arrested. But Ranjit’s relief is short-lived, as the villagers and their leaders launch a sustained campaign to force the family to drop the charges.
A cinematic documentary, To Kill a Tiger follows Ranjit’s uphill battle to find justice for his child. In India, where a rape is reported every 20 minutes and conviction rates are less than 30 percent, Ranjit’s decision to support his daughter is virtually unheard of. With tremendous access, we witness the emotional journey of an ordinary man facing extraordinary circumstances. A father whose love for his daughter forces a social reckoning that will reverberate for years to come.
2022. 127 min. Hindi and Nagpuri with English subtitles Provided by the National Film Board.

- 110 minutes. Pour un public mature.

At a Death Café, people gather together to discuss death. This event doesn’t have any particular objectives or themes aside from increasing everyone’s awareness of death and exploring our relationships with death, dying and grief. As we grapple with what life looks like today, having a safe and non-judgmental space to talk about difficult subjects is so important and can have a significant impact both on how we live and how we die.
Ottawa Public Library is partnering with the Home Hospice Association to offer death cafés with various themes. Check out the OPL website for upcoming death cafés (spring 2024).

Do you love to write? Is writing the air you breathe, or is there ink in your veins?
The Stittsville Creative Writing Group is a collection of people who love to write.
We meet weekly to read from text we have written on our own time during the previous week, and engage in other writing activities.
This is not a class on writing, or a workshop for manuscripts. Instead, we are people who love to write and share our works.
There are those who mostly listen rather than write, those who write prolifically but only share with the group, and a broad spectrum in between.
If your interest is in the love of writing, this group may be for you.

*Nominated for the Oscar for best documentary at the Academy Awards.

“Show, don’t tell” is well-known advice in the writing world, but it’s often misunderstood. In this interactive workshop, we’ll explore the concepts of ‘showing’ and ‘telling’ to understand when to use each effectively, since good writing balances both. We’ll discuss common pitfalls with ‘telling’ and demonstrate practical techniques to ‘show’ more, creating a more immersive reader experience. After participating in this workshop, you’ll be able to show like a pro and tell really well.
