Those Who Read Five Stalks of Grain May Want to Watch Mr Jones

Thank you to Ann for recommending Claire Keegan’s “Small Things Like These.” It is a pity that she didn’t have time to say more about such a wonderful novella. Sean recommended the graphic novel “Five Stalks of Grain”, illustrated by Ottawa artist Ivanka Galadza. I have put it on hold and look forward to reading it. The Holodomor was one of the worst atrocities of the 20th century. At the OPL one can borrow a fine film on Holodomor starring Edward Norton, “Mr. Jones.” Norton previously played Prince Andrei in the wonderful 2016 miniseries of “War and Peace.” “Mr. Jones” is the true story of a Welsh journalist, Gareth Jones, who reported on the Ukrainian Famine as it unfolded, while the Moscow correspondent of the New York Times pretended it wasn't happening.
