Spotlight on Francophonie: OPL celebrates Francophonie Month

Tuesday, March 7, 2023

OTTAWA – As the largest bilingual (French/English) public library in North America, Ottawa Public Library invites Francophones and Francophiles of all ages to enjoy several special programs and explore OPL’s many resources in French during Francophonie Month. Whether you're an avid reader, a lover of the arts, or just looking for a fun way to spend your time, there's something for everyone to enjoy.

One of the highlights of the month is Croisée des mots, a gathering of Franco-Ontarian literature enthusiasts. Join us Wednesday, March 15 when author Sébastien Pierroz will discuss his most recent book, Deux heures avant la fin de l’été, published by Éditions David. Registration required.

For those looking to dive deeper into the world of francophone literature, the Library is hosting a discussion with award-winning author Michèle Vinet, Thursday, March 23. Her book Le Malaimant won the prestigious Ottawa Book Award for French fiction in 2022. This is a fantastic opportunity to hear from a talented author about her writing process, the themes explored in her book, and her journey to becoming a published author.

In addition to literature-focused events, Ottawa Public Library is also offering a panel discussion with author Sylvain Lemay and artist André St-Georges, Saturday, March 25. The duo co-created the graphic novel Rouge Avril, which tells the story of the 2012 student protests in Montreal known as “Maple Spring”. The discussion promises to be an insightful exploration of the art of storytelling through the graphic novel format, as well as a reflection on the significance of the 2012 protests.

What better time than Francophonie Month to discover several online French resources such as Toutapprendre, Généalogie Québec, digital and audio books, animated children's books, magazines, newspapers and more!

The Library invites you to explore a wonderfully eclectic list of recommended books, films and music curated especially for Francophonie Month! For more information on our French programs, visit BiblioOttawaLibrary.ca
