Celebrate Asian Heritage Month with Ottawa Public Library

OTTAWA - Throughout the month of May, Ottawa Public Library (OPL) will be celebrating Asian Heritage Month. Asian Heritage Month is an opportunityto learn more about the many contributions of Canadians of Asian descent who have helped createthe amazing country we share today.

Everyone is invited to discover the legacy and diverse cultures of Asia through livestreamededucational and cultural programs at OPL--for all ages!

  • May 17 at 8pm: Tune in for a live moderated discussion with Jen SookfongLee about her acclaimed debut poetry collection, The Shadow List.She’ll be speaking with Ellen Chang-Richardson, the founder of Little Birds Poetry and the co-founder of Riverbed Reading Series.This evening is brought to you in partnership with Ottawa International Writers Fest.

  • Love Instagram? Check out OPL’s Teen Instagram account @oplteens_adosbpo every day during the week of May 17-21 for guest posts from local Asian community influencers. They’ll be talking all things Asian culture, from who they are, their involvement in the Ottawa Asian community, discussing Asian racism and finally recommendations on Asian resources and materials you can find at the library.

  • May 20 at 7pm: Enjoy a live demonstration of Japanese cooking with cooking instructor Emi Buzza and test out your cooking skills making salad rolls and teriyaki chicken rolls.

  • May 27at 7pm: What do you know about Uzbekistan? Every time Kseniya Tsoy would introduce herself as someone from Uzbekistan, she would hear the funniest reactions. Kseniya takes us on an illustrated journey to the heart of the Silk Road. Filled with humour and wisdom, her illustrations and stories depict the beautiful little things she loves about her country of birth.

  • May 29 at 3pm: Join us for a live Family program learning how to Bollywood dance.Learn the basic movements of the popular Indian dance from the Bollywood musical films from MASC artist, Kuljit Sodhi. Kuljit will be teaching Bhangra (folk dance), Dhandia(stick dance) and ever-popular Bollywood dances.

Tune into our weekly Storytimesfor children all month long to hear a selection of stories by and about people of Asian heritage.We have also created booklists for Asian History Month as another doorway to show the rich contributions of Asian Canadians to our cultural life.
