OTTAWA – This November, Ottawa Reads YA will feature four great authors of the Young Adult (YA) genre. YA fans will get the chance to connect with top YA authors and attend fascinating talks. This is a great chance to interact with authors and learn more about this innovative and exciting genre. Starting November 2, you can participate in workshops, listen to live author interviews, and ask authors questions of your own – all through live virtual channels. Here’s the full roster of events:
Tuesday November 2 at 7 pm – Ottawa Reads YA with Tanya Boteju
Join Tanya Boteju, acclaimed author of Kings, Queens, and In-Betweens, as she shares her latest YA novel, Bruised, and talks about the writing process. Bruised is a coming-of-age story about a teen girl navigating first love, identity, and grief as she immerses herself in the colorful, brutal, beautiful world of roller derby. Her writing life has mostly consisted of teaching writing in Vancouver, where she has continually been inspired by the brilliant young people in her midst. In both teaching and writing, she is committed to positive, diverse representation.
Thursday November 4 at 7 pm – Ottawa Bouquine with Mathieu Fortin(in French)
With author Sylvain Johnson as the interviewer, author Mathieu Fortin will try to demystify where his desire to write comes from, share inspiration for his latest novel — Défis virtuels — and transport you into his particular way of seeing the world! Since his first novel in 2008 he has specialized in stories where adventure and suspense predominate, with a penchant for scary stories, science fiction and fantasy. He has been writing and facilitating writing workshops since 2019 and will have loads of great tips for you as a writer!
Tuesday November 9 at 7 pm – Ottawa Bouquine with Laurence Beaudoin-Masse(in French)
Laurence Beaudoin-Masse, author of Rentrer son ventre et sourire, will have a talk moderated by author Marie-Christine Chartier. They’lldiscuss their creative process, the themes that inspire them, such as grief and social networks, and the place of women's and young adult literature in general. Laurence is working on a second novel and is a content contributor at Radio-Canada as a writer and designer. She would love to help girls who, like her, never feel like they can measure up.
Tuesday November 16 at 7 pm – Ottawa Reads YA with Tiffany JacksonJoin Tiffany Jackson, a New York Times Bestselling, award winning author of YA novels of several books, including her latest YA novel, White Smoke, will discuss her writing process. The Haunting of Hill House meets Get Out in this chilling YA psychological thriller and modern take on the classic haunted house story. In 2009, she wrote and directed the short horror film, The Field Trip— you can expect to receive a variety of great advice from Tiffany.
