Ottawa Public Library (OPL) holds literacy and intellectual freedom as fundamental pillars of a thriving, inclusive society. These pillars take on special significance during Capital Pride, a time dedicated to celebrating the diversity and vibrancy of the 2SLGTBQIA+ community. As a public library, OPL’s mission extends beyond providing access to books and information— OPL strives to create a space where everyone feels welcome, supported, and empowered to explore their identities and ideas.
At OPL, literacy is understood as more than the ability to read and write. It encompasses the capacity to understand, engage with, and critically examine the world. During Capital Pride, the library emphasizes literacy as a vital tool for self-expression and self-discovery, particularly for those in the 2SLGTBQIA+ community who may have faced barriers to accessing affirming resources and narratives.
OPL’s collection is enriched with diverse voices, including those from 2SLGTBQIA+ authors who share stories of love, resilience, and identity. Whether through fiction, memoirs, poetry, or non-fiction, the library ensures that its shelves reflect the full spectrum of human experience. During Pride, these works are highlighted to inspire dialogue, empathy, and understanding.
To further celebrate Capital Pride, OPL has curated booklists featuring a wide selection of 2SLGTBQIA+ titles for all age groups. Readers are encouraged to explore these booklists to find powerful stories, gain new perspectives, and deepen their understanding of the 2SLGTBQIA+ experience.

As Capital Pride is celebrated, it is important to recognize that public libraries play a crucial role in society, and specifically relating to intellectual freedom. OPL provides access to, but does not endorse, multiple viewpoints via its services, which includes collections, programs, displays, meeting room rentals, and Internet access. By safeguarding intellectual freedom, the library empowers the community to grow, learn, and advocate for their rights.
Ottawa Public Library remains dedicated to promoting literacy and intellectual freedom during Pride, and throughout the year.
The Library represents a commitment to championing the rights, stories, and voices of all, today and always. Ottawa Public Library is for everyone.
