On June 27th, we wish everyone a Happy Multiculturalism Day – a day to explore the many cultures from around the world that make up Canada.
One significant group is Italian Canadians: 1.6 million reside here, one of the largest Italian diasporas in the world.
During the month of June, we also celebrate Italian Heritage Month.
To honour Italian Canadians is also to honour the memory of innocent Italian Canadians who were interned as “enemy aliens” during World War II. This historical injustice finally met with a government apology on May 27, 2021. Prime Minister Trudeau stated:
Canadians of Italian heritage have helped shape Canada, and they continue to be an invaluable part of the diversity that makes us strong. Today, as we acknowledge and address historical wrongs against the Italian Canadian community, we also show our respect for their great contributions to our country
