OTTAWA — The days are getting longer. Summer is almost here and with it comes the TD Summer Reading Club (SRC); for children up to 12 years old.
A combination of in-person and virtual programming will engage children in the ultimate adventure: reading and exploring worlds of the imagination in a way that only books can truly offer. Ottawa Public Library (OPL) is adding an extra level of fun by inviting children to track their reading over the summer months — for a chance to win great prizes!
Starting today, Monday, June 13, families can visit their local OPL branch to pick up their child’s summer reading kit and to register for any number of in-person and virtual programs. SRC and reading materials are also available in alternative accessible formats, such as audio materials.
With programs and activities ranging from science to music, dancing to robotics, StoryWalks to magic, and even visit with animals such as Nature’s Ninjas and some very talkative parrots, OPL is sure to deliver something to fire up every child’s interest and curiosity. The illustrator for this year’s national TD Summer Reading Club, nationally recognized author and illustrator Rob Justus, happens to be a local resident and he will be making a special guest appearance and leading programs at several OPL branches where he will be sharing about creating your favorite characters.
A complete list of SRC programs and events is available on the OPL website’s Kids’ Zone. Including events with visits from some special local figures and athletes, such as members of Atlético Ottawa Soccer Club.
New this year, to help keep the reading going, busy families can order a bundle of books through the Ottawa Public Library’s online form, selecting their child’s favourite themes and reading level, and Library staff will put together a bundle of five books, just for them. The order form will be available under the “Make a booking” tab, at the top of the homepage of the OPL website.
Families with travel plans over the summer can bring their Summer Reading Club notebook with them to track their child’s reading while away, connect online to enjoy OPL’s different virtual programs, watch some children’s videos, visit the national SRC website for even more content, or visit any of the participating public libraries across Canada.
Drop into any of OPL’s 33 branches for more about the TD Summer Reading Club, register for a specific program, and pick up the summer reading kits, and of course some exciting books. It’s never too late to sign up and enjoy Summer Reading Club this year as special activities and programs will be going on all summer-long until August 31.
